Genus Pogona , more often called “Bearded Dragons” or “Beardies” Get their name from the rows of spikes that have a beard like appearances. Although the spiky under jaw appears to be sharp, it is actually soft and rubbery.

When threatened or angry they are able puff-up and also change the color of their beards. Giving them a larger, pricklier appearance.

Bearded Dragons were introduced into the United States during the 1990′s as pets.

They have exploded in popularity since then. Australia has banned the sale of its wildlife for pet trade since the 1960′s.

All Dragons sold in the United States today, have been bred here. But, the original stock is believed to have been illegally smuggled during the 70′s, 80′s and 90′s.

Pogona Vitticeps, The Central Bearded Dragon is the most common here in the U.S.

If you own a Beardie as a pet, it most likely belongs to this species. Central Bearded Dragons (Pogona vitticeps) originated from arid and semi-arid regions of Central Australia.

Bearded Dragon Lifespan

They can grow up to 24 Inches, including the tail. Most can live up to 10yrs, (Pogona vitticeps) has been know to live almost up to 15yrs in captivity. In the wild thier lifespan is only about 3-5 years.

Successfully raising your baby bearded dragons should not be a daunting task. You should be prepared and know what to look for when choosing a baby .

Does the baby beardie seem active. Is it able to hunt down and catch its food. Is it playing dead or have does it have problems moving.
